La Jota has been farming the slopes of Howell Mountain since 1898, making it one of Napa's oldest mountain vineyard sites. The wines here are built for the long haul — dense, structured Cabernet Sauvignon that shows off the iron-rich volcanic soils and high elevation. Chris Carpenter, who also crafts wines for sister estates Cardinale and Mt. Brave, brings a deft hand to these powerful reds. Visits are by appointment and lean intimate, with views that make the drive up worth it.
