Smith-Madrone is one of Napa Valley's quiet originals — the Smith brothers planted their Spring Mountain District estate in 1971, making them among the earliest pioneers on that rugged, fog-kissed hillside. Their Riesling is the sleeper hit: a benchmark example of cool-climate California Riesling that routinely surprises people who think they don't like Riesling. The winery is family-run and fiercely independent, producing small quantities with minimal outside intervention. Book a visit if you can — Spring Mountain is worth the drive.
