This is the winery built underground — the country's first vineyard estate winery constructed entirely below grade, dug into a hillside in Alexander Valley back in the 1970s. The cool, earth-sheltered cellar keeps things naturally temperate, and the picnic grounds under old oaks make it an easy, unpretentious stop. Petite Sirah from old estate vines is the signature here, alongside solid Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc. Walk-ins are welcome and the relaxed, family-run feel is the whole point.
