Skinner Vineyards was founded in 1861 by James Skinner, a Scottish Gold Rush miner who established J. Skinner Native Wine and Brandy Co. in El Dorado County. The modern winery was re-established by Mike and Carey Skinner starting in 2007 after discovering their family connection to James Skinner, and they continue operating on land near the original vineyard while preserving heritage grape varieties.
